Brevard - Barbara Lowder Whitley, 89, passed away on January 15, 2022 at home at The Inn at College Walk. A native of Stanly County, she was the daughter of the late James and Mabel Lowder. She was proceeded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years Charles B Whitley, son Stan Whitley, and brother Jim Lowder. She was a member of Brevard Wesleyan Church. A graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, (now known as Appalachian State University), her career was in education as a teacher and a coach. She was a devoted Tarheel fan. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Some of her favorite times were watching her grandchildren play sports and she was definitely their biggest fan! Barbara enjoyed dining at Creekside Subs with her friends and the staff. She was a loving wife, mother, Nana, and sister to her family who deeply loved her. Survivors include her daughter Toni Gant and husband Randall of Pisgah Forest; son Jeff Whitley and wife Sharon of Charlotte; grandchildren Brooke Zawoysky & husband Matt; Chris Mulenex & wife Erin; Randi Frizzell & husband Bobby; Lauren Hackett & husband Adam; and Kaitlyn Whitley; great grandchildren Rylynn Hackett, Hayden & Teagan Zawoysky, Everett & Everli Searcy, and Zoey Frizzell; Sisters Betty Gilliam of Charlotte, NC and Billie Talbert of Pawleys Island, SC. Special thank you to all of her caregivers at College Walk and Four Seasons Hospice, and to the friendly staff at Creekside who cared for her like family. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Brevard Wesleyan Church on Wednesday, January 19th at 12:00pm. The family requests that masks be worn.
