IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Hensley
Brown
July 11, 1938 – December 25, 2023
Betty Hensley Brown passed away on Christmas Day, 2023 at Fair Oaks Health & Rehabilitation in Fairfax, VA, surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dwight and their infant daughter Cynthia. Betty is survived by her daughter Leslie Cady and her husband Paul of Ashburn, VA, as well as her grandsons Zachary Cady of Columbus, OH and Alex Cady of Nashville, TN.
She is also survived by her sister Erma Barnett of Wilmington, NC and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Betty was born July 11, 1938, in Burnsville, NC. She was the youngest of twelve children born to John Milton & Lydia Duncan Hensley. Growing up in Pisgah Forest, Betty married Dwight Brown in 1957 and lived in Brevard, NC until 2013.
She was an active community member. She enjoyed volunteering for the Hospital Auxiliary, singing in the Brevard Civic Chorus, playing cards with her Bridge Club, and serving in many roles at Glen Cannon Country Club. She took up golf at Dwight's encouragement. Very competitive by nature, Betty became a 3-time Glen Cannon Women's Club Champion and the Blue Ridge Women's Golf Association Champion. She also chaired the North Carolina Women's State Amateur Tournament and was a member of the "Carolinas Cup" Team. Teaching the Junior Golf program alongside her husband Dwight, was among her most cherished memories and proudest achievements. Over the years, many young Brevardians' swings were made!
After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the late 1980s,Betty opened Betty Brown Realty where she cared for each customer as if they were family. Betty's family moved her to Northern Virginia in 2013 where many new memories were captured. She loved the Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery of Art, the Botanical Gardens, and the Kennedy Center. Betty finally saw one of her favorite bands, The Eagles, in celebration of her 8oth Birthday at Nationals Stadium in Washington, DC. Although her last 20 years were full of suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, Betty never gave up! She had faith in God, which never wavered. She was a proud and determined southern lady, whose favorite thing was being with her family. "Nana" loved her grandsons to no end. The family would like to thank Pro Medica Hospice for their kindness and excellent care over the last year.
