Obituary

Betty L Schumaker, 89, of Fletcher, NC passed away on August 20, 2024 after a long illness.

Born February 10, 1935 in Defiance, OH, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Eunice(Slusser) Poetzinger.

A resident of Ohio most of her life, Betty was the Valedictorian of the 1953 class of Uniontown High School and graduated from Heidelberg College in 1957. She taught elementary school in Northeast Ohio concluding her career in 1988 at the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District.   She shared her love of learning in both the school classroom and the many Sunday school classes she taught over the years.  More importantly Betty will be remembered for her kindness and compassion.  While raising two young children Betty and Don fostered babies for ten years providing a brief haven for newly born infants who were awaiting adoption.  She continued her lifelong enjoyment of music, playing the piano, singing in choirs, and exploring new instruments.  Betty enjoyed spending time in her flower garden and was an avid bird watcher.  She especially enjoyed sharing her passion for birds with her children and grandchildren.

On June 8, 1958, Betty married the former Donald Schumaker with whom she enjoyed 66 years of marriage until his passing on May 20, 2024.

They are survived by their daughter, Mary (William) Crow; son Steve(Shelly) Schumaker; grandchildren Adam(Caroline) Crow, Aaron(Lauren) Crow, Emily Crow, Allison (Patrick Hilderbrand) Schumaker, Matthew Schumaker; and great grandchildren, Willow Crow, Charlotte Crow and Otto Hilderbrand.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brother Jack Poetzinger .
