IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carolyn Christine
Gilbert
August 26, 1940 – August 28, 2024
Carolyn Owen Gilbert, 84, of Brevard, NC passed away peacefully on the 28th day of August 2024. Born on August 26, 1940 in Brevard, Carolyn was the daughter of Paul Clayton Owen and Syvella McCall Owen. Growing up, she was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She graduated from Brevard High School in 1958 and then attended Brevard College.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Daniel Everette Gilbert and brother Branley Clayton Owen. Left to cherish her memory and the wonderful times they shared together is her daughter, Susan Caroline Gilbert of Brevard.
After graduating from Brevard College, Carolyn met and married Dan and they enjoyed 39 years of marriage. Upon being transferred by his work, the family moved to Greenville, NC and then to Raleigh, where Carolyn lived for over 40 years. Through the various places she lived, she always enjoyed her career as a legal assistant, especially doing estate work. She relished challenging the attorneys and sparring with them over legal issues and points of law. All who knew her, knew she never backed down from a good argument. After retirement, she and Dan spent their time at Emerald Isle, NC, enjoying the beach, boating and the many friends they made while living there. Carolyn and Susan also traveled to many places around the world sharing wonderful adventures together.
In 2015, Carolyn moved back to her beloved Brevard to the property where she grew up. She spent her time working in her flower gardens, visiting with her neighbors and friends and enjoying her grand dog "Lexie". She loved classical music, antiques and was a voracious reader of nonfiction, especially political biographies and on world leaders. She also enjoyed studying the history of Transylvania County and her family ancestry. Carolyn loved nothing more than visiting old cemeteries and piecing together family history. She will be remembered for her feisty but kind and generous spirit.
Moody-Connolly Funeral Home, Brevard is in charge of the arrangements. A private graveside service will be held at Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Transylvania County Historical Society, PO Box 2061, Brevard, NC 28712.
