Dan Major LaFoy died on Saturday, January 2nd, 2016 a few days after returning to his home in Sapphire, North Carolina, having spent several enjoyable days at Christmastime with his family in Atlanta, Georgia. Dan was born on February 17, 1926, in Anderson, South Carolina. In 1944, he joined the US Navy and served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific fleet, an experience that allowed him to see much of the world and created a lifelong love of the ocean.
Following the war, he married and moved his young family to Palm Beach County Florida and had a 35 year career as a technical specialist at the jet engine testing facility of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corporation. While living in Florida, he enjoyed many leisure activities with his family, boating and deep water fishing. After retiring he and his wife moved to Sapphire, North Carolina. Active and healthy throughout his entire life, he continued to enjoy life to the fullest, especially golf at Sapphire Valley Country Club. His golfing experiences were highlighted by an unforgettable round he played at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Dan was predeceased by his cherished wife of nearly 50 years, Peggy Fant LaFoy, his parents, Charles Tavener LaFoy and Sarah Elizabeth LaFoy, and sisters Martha LaFoy, Sarah Harman and Nina Berry. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Kathryn LaFoy and Nancy LaFoy Zimmerman and her husband, Ron Zimmerman and loved his grandchildren Haley Zimmerman Hollis (Alex), Kathryn Zimmerman, and Michael Zimmerman (Brandy). Dan will be remembered by those who knew him for his cheerful nature, his kindness to all, and his loyalty to both family and his many friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 9th, at 11:00 am in the Kellett Chapel at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, with a private family inurnment at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Cashiers-Glenville Volunteer Fire Dept. or Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society.
