Delbert Ray Smith, 80, of Pisgah Forest, passed away October 25, 2012.
He was born October 21, 1932 in Barberton, Ohio to the late Esther Cecilia Snyder & Chester Leroy Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Arlene Galehouse. Survivors include his wife, Helen Smith; son, Matthew D. Smith and wife, Paula, of Wooster, OH; daughter, Esther L. Bringman of Greensboro, NC; daughter, Cynthia A. Syvertsen and husband, Steven, of Blairstown, NJ; and son, Jeffrey D. Smith and his wife, Lisa, of Hendersonville, NC; nine grandchildren; his brother, Melvin Smith, of Wadsworth, OH, and brother, Kenneth Smith and his wife, Mary Lee, of Norton, OH.
He retired in 1996 after 26 years as Corporate Risk Manager of Rubbermaid, Inc. in Wooster, OH, and moved to Brevard.
Received his BS BA with Finance Major from Akron University in OH.
He served in the Army as a Sergeant during the Korean War.
A charter member of the Wayneaire's Barbershop Chorus in Wooster, OH, where he held several leadership positions and was awarded "Barbershopper of the Year" several times. His love of singing carried through once moving to NC as he joined the Land of the Sky Chorus in Asheville.
Lifelong Red Cross Blood and platelet donor of over 50 gallons.
Member of First United Methodist Church in Brevard and sang in the choir.
Enjoyed volunteering on trail maintenance crew in Pisgah National Forest for several years.
There will be a memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Brevard at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov 3. The service will be officiated by the Reverend W. Michael Holder.
He will be interned at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, OH.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions be made directly to KOALA, Brevard, NC in his memory.
