Obituary

Donald Owen, 80, of Brevard, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 8, 2025, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 7, 1945, to the late Sam and Mae Galloway Owen.

Known affectionately as "Sleepy," by many or "Papa Dude" by his grandkids, Don had a warm heart and a quick wit. He found great happiness in being surrounded by family, especially playing with his grandchildren. He loved camping at the lake, casting a line while fishing, and sharing jokes that never failed to bring laughter to those around him. His kind spirit and fun-loving nature made every gathering brighter.

He was preceded in death by his son Jonathan Owen, brothers James Owen and Winfred "Toby" Owen; brother-in-laws, Joe Osteen and Lionel Jones; sister-in-laws June Owen and Faye Owen.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Doris Owen; daughter Kelly Dodson (Jamie); sons Brent Owen (Desiree') and Dane Owen; all of Brevard. Don was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Kaylin Owen, Ashlyn Dodson, Bailey Owen, Matthew Dodson, Kaidance Owen, and Zoey Owen—all of whom brought him immense joy.

He is also survived by his brothers Lloyd Owen (Jackie) and Dennis Owen (Stacy); sisters Agnes Osteen, Helen McMahan (Auzel "Wimpy"), and Doris Jones; as well as several nieces and nephews who cherished their time with him.

Don received his diploma from Brevard High School and went on to earn several certifications including Basic Law Enforcement Training, Jail Management and Operations, Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and Homicide Investigations. His dedication to public service was recognized through numerous awards for Outstanding and Dedicated Service to the citizens of Transylvania County.

Don devoted many years to the betterment of his community through his work with the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office and later as the City of Brevard Public Works Director where he retired from. His commitment to public safety and civic responsibility left a lasting impact on the county he called home.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home starting at 1 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Eddie Dodson and Rev. Jason Rogers officiating. The graveside service and final resting place will follow at Dunn's Creek Cemetery.
