The Reverend Donald B Schumaker, 89, of Fletcher, NC passed away on May 20, 2024, from medical complications after a long illness. Born December 16, 1934, in Barberton, OH he was the only child of the late Wilbert and Ruth (Snyder) Schumaker.

A resident of Ohio most of his life, Donald was a 1952 graduate of Manchester High School.  He graduated from Heidelberg College in 1956 and Mission House Theological Seminary in Sheboygan, WI in 1959.   Donald served many churches in the United Church of Christ during his 40 years of ministry including Emmanuel UCC in Valley City, Suffield UCC in Suffield, Grace UCC in Massillon, St John UCC in Bolivar and Myerstown UCC in Myerstown, PA.   He was committed to youth ministry and left lasting impressions on those he touched in both the local congregations and at Templed Hills summer camp where he often served as director or counselor.

While raising two young children Donald and Betty fostered babies for ten years providing a brief haven for newly born infants who were awaiting adoption. He enjoyed volunteering with the Suffield fire department and spent many Friday nights officiating Ohio high school football games. He enjoyed camping, which provided many great memories for his children and grandchildren.

On June 8, 1958, Donald married the former Betty L Poetzinger who survives him along with their daughter, Mary (William) Crow; son Steve (Shelly) Schumaker; grandchildren Adam (Caroline) Crow, Aaron (Lauren) Crow, Emily Crow, Allison (Patrick Hilderbrand) Schumaker, Matthew Schumaker; and great grandchildren, Willow Crow, Charlotte Crow, and Otto Hilderbrand.

Pastor Tina Green will officiate an 11:00 a.m. memorial service on June 8, 2024, at St John UCC in Bolivar, OH where his family will receive callers from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall prior to the service.  A light lunch will be served to friends and family after the service.   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heidelberg University at heidelberg.edu/give.
