Elizabeth W. Key, 87, formerly of Wilmington, NC, died Sunday, August 1, in Brevard,
NC. A resident of Wilmington for 61 years, she moved to College Walk Retirement Community
in 2005 to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She was born in Randolph County to the late
Edward and Blanche Walker on December 14, 1922. She was the youngest of nine children. Her
five brothers and three sisters predeceased her.
She was a homemaker until her children were older. She graduated from Cape Fear
Community College in Wilmington where she received a Licensed Practical Nurse certificate and
worked at Babies Hospital at Wrightsville Beach, NC and in the Pediatrics Unit at New Hanover
Memorial Hospital in Wilmington.
She was a faithful and active member of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in
Wilmington.
She was the devoted wife of the late Russell Radford Key, Sr. and a loving mother to her
son, the late Russell Radford Key, Jr. and her daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Padrick (husband, R.
Bryan). Other survivors include her four grandsons and their wives: M. Bryan Padrick and
wife, Karen, of Farnham, England; Greg Padrick and wife, Jennifer, of Westminster, MD; Scott
Key and wife, Jamie, of Wilmington, Richard Key and wife, Vanessa, of Fairfax, VA. and six
great grandchildren: Alice and Finleigh Padrick, Emma Padrick, Maddie and Harrison Key and
Cullen Key.
A memorial service will be held at 11 :00 a.m., Wednesday, August 4 at the Andrews
Mortuary chapel on Market Street in Wilmington with the Reverend Neal Wingfield of Fifth
Avenue United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends at the conclusion
of the service. A private family graveside service will then follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
At a later date, a memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Brevard.
