Felix Anthony Szczepanski (Phil), of Brevard, NC passed away on August 2, 2024. He was 92 years old.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Joan Szczepanski; his children, Dr Duane Szczepanski of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Janice Lacy (Dale) of DeBordiue, South Carolina, and Maria Wynens of Atlanta, Georgia; his six granddaughters, Caelin Lacy-Cary (Mike), Emma M. Lacy, Glenna F. Lacy, Hannah D. Lacy, Dr Kallie E. Wynens, and Graysen Wynens.
Phil was born on October 25, 1931, in Chester, PA, to Felix and Harriet Szczepanski. He attended St James High School For Boys in Chester PA. Upon graduation, Phil attended Villanova College in Villanova, PA, followed by graduation in 1956 from The United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Phil graduated with a commission in the United States Naval Reserve, a BS degree, and a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer License. After graduation from the Academy Phil began sailing with American Export Lines.
Phil was later hired by Admiral Hyman Rickover in the development and production of the first nuclear propelled submarines.
Phil worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1961 to 1992 as the Chairman of the Nuclear Safety Review Board. He was well respected and admired by his peers and received many awards for his hard work and dedication.
Phil was an avid, elite distance runner, completing the Boston Marathon five times along with many other competitive races too numerous to count. His hobbies included traveling to locations around the world, hiking, and capturing the beauty of nature through his photography.
Phil Szczepanski will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. His legacy of kindness, gentleness, and compassion will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Precious Blood of Christ in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. There will be a Repast in the Parish Center following Mass.
