IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frank Harry
Kuhn
December 11, 1947 – December 25, 2023
Frank Henry Kuhn (or as many knew him, "Ouigo") of Pisgah Forest, NC, passed away peacefully on the morning of 25 December 2023 at Haywood Regional Medical Center in Clyde, NC at the age of 80. He was born to Frank and Virginia Kuhn in Nyack, NY on 11 December 1943.
He is survived by his brother-in-law Richard J. Hartnett (wife Sandra) of Preston, CT and sisterin-law Helen Cole Kuhn of Jacksonville, IL; nieces Eileen Holdridge (husband Trevor) of Ledyard, CT and Katherine Lucy (husband John) of Pawcatuck, CT; and nephews Richard D. Hartnett of Topsham, ME, Stephen Kuhn (wife Adrienne Knapp), of Saint Louis, MO, and Erik Kuhn of Saint Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his best friend and wife Barbara Kuhn, his parents, and his brother David Kuhn.
Ouigo graduated from high school in Raleigh, NC, and in his early years he worked as a ranch hand in the Tetons, worked for the Danzinger family in Chapel Hill helping to manage the Villa Teo, the Ranch House, the Zoom Zoom, and the Rathskeller restaurants, he graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with degrees in German and Psychology, and served as a cook in the Army Reserves. He married the love of his life, Barbara Hartnett Kuhn in March 1968. After six years dedicated to opening/managing new restaurants, he worked almost 20 years for Westinghouse in Raleigh, NC, where he built high-energy teams to identify and solve problems using modern methods and technology, serving as Master Scheduler, Senior Buyer, Factory Control Manager, and Director of Manufacturing Planning. In 1992 he co-founded Group Systems International, an international management consulting company, and soon bought the education and consulting division of that company, forming a new company called "OUIGO, Inc.," that focused on management, manufacturing, and educational consulting and training. After retiring in 2002, Frank and Barbara moved to the mountains of North Carolina where he and Barbara renovated a mountain cabin in the Pisgah Forest - an area where he had hiked and camped for decades.
Frank always loved the outdoors. He loved nature, and through the years he always found a way to be outside, whether it be hiking, cycling, water-skiing, or just playing. He especially enjoyed outdoor adventures in Dupont and Pisgah Forest with Barbara and their yellow Labrador retrievers. He took great pride in helping clear trails with friends in the Glen Cannon Association and loved to lead hikes in the community. Frank led a full and varied life and went to join his best friend and wife Barbara, to be at peace with nature's God of Love. To quote Ouigo himself, " … life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body … but rather to skid in sideways from a full and varied life, with a glass of wine in one hand and a cigar in the other, totally worn-out, and yelling woo-hoo! What a great life! Thank you, friends and loved ones, for aiding me on the journey of a lifetime!"
There is no public funeral or memorial service planned at this time. Instead, Frank asked that friends and loved ones take a day to enjoy and appreciate nature and the beautiful outdoors. When you feel the warmth of the sun and the gentle breeze on your face, he will be there.
