Dr. Frazier Malcolm Long, age 79, of Brevard, North Carolina, died Friday July 1, 2011 at his residence.
He was born August 15, 1931 in Jacksonville Florida to the late Richard and Mabel Long.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his spouse Betty McDevitt Long, one son, Matthew Long and two brothers Troy and Richard Long.
Dr. Long earned his Bachelor and Master degrees from Western Carolina University. During and after his time at Western Carolina University, Dr. Long served for seven years in the U.S. Army. He earned his Doctorate of Education from Nova University in 1975.
Affectionately know as "Coach" to many generations of Duval County high school alumni, Dr. Long coached football, baseball and taught history at Terry Parker High School. He then served in administration as Asst. Principal of Fletcher High School, Principal of Edward H. White High School, and Asst. Superintendent of Schools for Duval County.
Upon retirement and moving to Brevard, Dr. Long was an active member of American Legion, Post #88.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Wright of New York City; one son James Malcolm Long of Kennesaw, Georgia and five grandchildren: Sheridan A. Wright, II, Brittany Wright Sherwood, Charles Frazier Long, James Matthew Long, and Caroline Jane Long.
A brief memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm Sunday July 10, 2011 at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2:00pm until 3:00pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
Moody-Connolly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
