Obituary

George Charles Cowan, treasured by many, passed over on Monday, September 27, 2010. He was 80 years old. George lived in Lake Toxaway with his wife, Sally, and son, Christopher Brandes. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, and was an avid fan of the Dodgers, until they left for L.A. He had been a radio announcer, in White Plains, N.Y., where he lived for many years. George was also pictured in the advertising for Tareyton cigarettes, known for the slogan, "I'd rather fight than switch." He enjoyed many years in automobile advertising, until he retired. After their marriage in 1987, George and Sally lived in Tarrytown, N.Y., and Bernardsville, N.J., until they moved to Lake Toxaway five years ago. George had a passion for life. He loved sports and enjoyed sharing his gifts of speaking and singing at the Church of the Good Shepherd, in Cashiers. He was also enriched through his volunteer work with the Humane Society and the Dental Clinic, both in Cashiers. He touched all who knew him with his "joie de vie." George is survived by his beloved wife, Sally, his sons, Steven, from New Jersey, Kevin Brandes from New York, and Christopher. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Betty Cowan, three nieces and one nephew. The memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 7, 2010 at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Church of Good Shepherd or the Humane Society, in Cashiers.
