George Woodside Wilson, 80, retired driver's license examiner and farmer, of Pisgah Forest, NC passed away Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Transylvania Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
A lifelong resident of Transylvania County, George was briefly employed with Olin Corporation before beginning a 48-year employment with the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles as a driver's license examiner. In addition to the Brevard office, he also worked in the Hendersonville, Highlands, Marshall, Mars Hill and Waynesville offices before the Brevard office became a full-week station. George loved putting humor into life and entertained at many social functions. He published a book, Poor House Farms, in 2010 in which he told his favorite stories and life experiences. He also enjoyed farming and was active in the Transylvania County Cattlemen's Association. He was frequently seen in his Model A truck at local parades and events.
George was the son of the late Sutton and Lillian Helen Siddle Wilson. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Gloria Ann Rhyne, Sidney Wilson, and Betty Jo Edmonds. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ellen Rae Garrison Wilson; daughters Sandra Wilson and Susan Case; grandson Archie Case III; sisters-in-law Jane Norton, Virginia Bailey, and Martha Garrison; brothers-in-law Richard Garrison and Haskell Garrison, several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Brevard. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Pisgah Gardens in Pisgah Forest.
