Obituary

Gregg Lee Crowell age 72 of Lake Toxaway passed away at Care Partners in Brevard on Friday, February 02, 2024.

He was born March 21, 1951 to Walter Crowell and Florence Smith in Nassau County, New York and grew up in Asheville, North Carolina.

He was a graduate of Asheville Catholic High School, Berea College and received his MBA from Western Carolina University. He was a disabled Vietnam veteran. In Vietnam he fought with distinction with HHC 214th Combat Aviation Battalion as a Light weapons Infantryman with the Airborne Pathfinders. Through his actions in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star. After Vietnam he went on to become a building contractor, a plumbing contractor, and a Real Estate Broker. He worked with his father, Walter Crowell in both the construction and restaurant businesses.

Over the years he volunteered with many organizations including the Lake Toxaway Volunteer Fire Dept., Transylvania County Library, Transylvania Literacy Council, North Toxaway Baptist Church Food Bank, and the Lake Toxaway Community Center. He also went on church mission trips and disaster relief trips.

He had a heart for the disadvantaged and suffering children in this world. He was a Baptist and a man of great faith.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lodema Debty, daughter Bethany Hall (James) of La Luz, New Mexico, granddaughter Juliana Hall, a son Travis Crowell of Boone, North Carolina, a sister Deborah Carter (Mark) of New Market, Tennessee. Four brothers: Gary Crowell (Sandi) of Texas, Glenn Crowell (Donna) of Hayesville, Jeff Crowell (Anne) of Hendersonville and Billy Crowell (Gretchen) of Knoxville, Tennessee.

He is also survived by his mother-in- law, Sadie Debty of Marble whom he loved dearly. Three sisters-in-law: Reatha Brown (Larry) of Andrews, Connie Phillips (William) of Marble and Pamela Flowers of Blairsville, Georgia. Three brothers-in-law: Johnny Debty of Elberton, Georgia, Walter Debty (Dianne) of Marble and Robert Debty of Marble.

He also leaves behind his life-long best friend Hobert Shelton of Asheville.

Visitation will be from 5pm-7pm Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Moody-Connelly Funeral Home in Brevard. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, February 7,2024 at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 2 PM at the North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
