Harold Riley Byers, of Brevard, departed this earthly life on Thursday, November 28th, 2019.
He celebrated 92 wonderful years of life. Born in Clay County, NC on June 2, 1927. Harold served his country during WWII patrolling the autobahn in Germany. He moved to Brevard to work for Olin Manufacturing as a paper foreman. He retired in 1981 at age 55.
Harold owned and operated "The Orchard House," an apple orchard in Little River that offered "pick your own" apples for people in the community. Harold was also known for his perfectly manicured lawns, and the ability to grow beautiful flowers, especially roses. He enjoyed teasing people, especially his grandkids.
Harold also enjoyed helping family, friends and neighbors with anything they needed. He has spent the last 23 years being caregiver to his wife, who is visually impaired. At age 92, he still enjoyed driving, grocery shopping, cooking, and tending to his flowers.
Harold was preceded in death by first wife, Earline Merrill Byers; parents Joseph Glenn and Artie Mae Ellis Byers; twin brother Carroll Byers; older brothers Denver Byers and Ivan Byers, and sister Jayvena Byers.
Survived by his wife Theresa Wright Byers of Brevard; daughter Sandra Byers King and son John Glen Byers; daughter-in-law Susan Brittian Byers; grandchildren Jonathan and Jacob Byers; Austin King; Allison King Cole and husband Hayden Cole.
Harold will be greatly missed by friends and family. They welcome you to a celebration of life service held at Little River Baptist Church, where he was a member, on Tuesday, December 3rd. Visitation from 1pm to 2:30 pm in the fellowship hall. The service will be held at 2:30 pm. He will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest, NC with military rites conducted by the Transylvania County Honor Guard.
