Hilton Hayes
Reid
August 2, 1929 – November 1, 2024
Hilton "Chuck" Hayes Reid, 95, died peacefully in Highlands-Cashiers Hospital on November 1, 2024, following a brief illness. Graveside services with military rights will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, 2:00 pm, at Gillespie Evergreen Cemetery in Brevard, North Carolina.
Hilton was born August 2, 1929, in Brevard, NC. He was predeceased by his parents Claude Freeman Reid and Ethel Elizabeth Hayes Reid; his sisters Virginia, GeorgiaAnn (Adrian), Patsy (Toby), Marsha Nell; and brothers Clarence, Albert (Vida), Charles, Spencer (Isabel), Bob (Dottie). He was predeceased by his son, Dennis Russell Reid, and a step-son, Danny Oliver.
Born and raised in Brevard. He attended Brevard High School where he excelled in the sports of baseball, football and basketball. He enlisted in the US Air Force at the age of 18 and spent many years stateside and then abroad, including Japan, Guam, Vietnam and Germany. Hilton went on to have a 30 year career in the Air Force, serving as a Chief Master Sargeant.
After retiring from the military, Hilton became a real estate broker for several years in New Mexico and Arizona, before pursuing his life-long passion in golf. In 1981, he sought his PGA card to become a Pro. In July of 1981, he qualified for the Business Men's Division Title in the City Men's Golf Tournament at Arroyo Del Oso in Albuquerque, NM. In 1985, Hilton moved to Mesa, AZ, and worked as a Golf Pro at Alta Mesa Country Club for several years, and later became the Golf Pro and General Manager of The Foothills Golf Club in Tempe, AZ.
In 1994, it was time for Hilton to return home, so he moved back to Brevard and lived there until his passing. Throughout his lifetime, Hilton enjoyed great health, travel and fun times. He played more rounds of golf than anyone could count at the Glen Cannon Golf Course, as well as many other courses throughout Western North Carolina. Until his recent illness, he continued to play golf several times each week, along with weekly card games with great friends. Hilton was full of life. He lived simply, and yet, fully.
Hilton was a loving uncle and is survived by ten (10) nieces and nephews who loved him dearly, as well as many great friends. He will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars/VFW Post 4309 in Brevard, NC, or the Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad in Cashiers, NC.
