Obituary

Hobart Cornelious Barton, of Westminster, SC, went home to be with the Lord on November 16, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Geneva Galloway Barton, a son, Morris Hobart Barton, a grandson and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by four children, Carroll Barton of Charleston, SC, Rickey Barton of Brevard, NC, Joyce McClain of Lake Toxaway, NC, and Mildred Barton of the home. He is also survived by a brother, Denis Barton of Brevard, 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. Hobart was born in Transylvania County, NC on September 26, 1919. He was the son of the late Davis and Rosa Capps Barton of the Selica area of the county. His paternal grandparents were Elbert and Laura Dunn Barton, and his maternal grandparents were Alfred and Margaret Stone Capps. Hobart lived in Transylvania County until the 1960's, when he was hired at the Saco Lowell Plant in Easley, SC. He worked at Saco Lowell for twenty years, retired, and moved to Wesminster, SC. Hobart often joked that he was a "jack of all trades and master of none". Before he was hired at Saco Lowell, Hobart worked a variety of jobs, beginning with hoeing corn when he was just a boy. He worked at both the Toxaway and Brevard Tanneries, the Kaywoodie Pipe Mill, and at the Brickyard in Etowah. He also worked for a time at the Citizens Telephone Company, as well as the National Forest Service at the State Hatchery. If a job ended, he usually had another job before sundown. For several years while in North Carolina, he worked for the Cornelious family, farming in Henderson County in the summer months and in Florida in the winter. A farmer all of his life, Hobart enjoyed work and family, and harvested friends wherever he went. Although he will be missed by those he has left behind, we rejoice in his victory, knowing that he is happy, healthy, and home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 20, 2010 in the Chapel of Moody-Connolly Funeral Home with the Rev. Rex Galloway officiating. Burial will be in Cathey's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 pm Friday at the funeral home.
