Obituary

Surrounded by his loving family at home, Hubert Clifton Brown, Sr. passed away peacefully on November 5, 2023, at the age of 81 in Brevard, North Carolina.

He was born on April 17, 1942, in the River Township of Jackson County, NC to the late Elva Octavia Brown and the late Alvin Luker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wonderful aunt and adoptive mother Marie Brown Coward, who raised him from the age of 7, his first wife, Virginia Grogan Brown, whom he was married to for 16 years and shared three children, his sisters, Opal Brown Bryson and Juanita McCall, and his brother, Arville Brown. He was a member of East Fork Baptist Church.

Hubert lived in Cashiers, NC during most of his teenage years and attended Glenville High School for a short time before moving to Brevard. He attended Brevard High briefly before joining the U.S. Army in 1961. He enlisted in basic training at Fort Gordon, GA before attending the US Army Ordnance School at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland and becoming a certified welder. His military career took him to many army posts around the U.S. and in Germany including Fort Dix, NJ, Fort Benning, GA, Bamberg, Germany and Fort Riley, KS where he proudly served with A Troop, 3rd Squadron, 5th U.S. Calvary, 9th Infantry Division – The Black Knights. From there he was sent to Vietnam where he served and saved many soldiers' lives on the battlefield. He was awarded several awards and commendations during his tour of duty including the National Defenses Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Bronze Star with "V" Device on January 29, 1967, just before returning home to his family in Brevard. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and enlisted into the Army Reserves in Brevard where he became a Drill Sergeant for several more years before closing out his Army career in 1973.

When he returned to Brevard, Hubert began working at Sid Barnett's Machine Shop as a certified welder. He was soon recruited by L.B. Vaughn, Brevard Police Chief, who asked him to join the City of Brevard Police Department. It was at that time that he completed his associate degree in law enforcement at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute.  In December 1970, Hubert transferred to the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office, where he served as Chief Investigator under Sheriff Milford Hubbard. In February 1983, he married Sandy Duckworth of Brevard. He dedicated himself to law enforcement and Transylvania County until his retirement in 1985.

Following his law enforcement retirement, Hubert pursued a more peaceful life and his passion for trout farming by founding Gourmet Mountain Trout of WNC, Inc. He worked as a trout farmer for 15 years and helped others in Transylvania County establish their own farms. At the height of his farming career, Transylvania County had 38 active trout farms. Hubert's dedication to his work and his community left a lasting impact on those around him.

Hubert was a devoted family man and is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sandy Duckworth Brown of the home, his children: Hubert Clifton (Cliff) Brown Jr. (Jennifer) of Brevard, Tina Michele Brown of Augusta, GA, Tricia Brown Ashe (Jamie) of Cullowhee, NC, and Jennifer Melissa Brown of Brevard.
