Known county-wide for the many houses he built over a period of over 50 years, James Verlin Dills, age 95, died at The Oaks of Brevard on February 17, 2011. He is survived by his son, Johnny Dills of Brevard; his daughter, Gayle Green of Denver, NC; his grandson, Craig Dills of Arden; and his brother, Truey Dills of Hendersonville. The son of the late James Harley Dills and Ida Cagle Dills, Verlin was a native of Franklin, North Carolina. He was married 64 years to Lillian Clark Dills, who predeceased him in 2006. In addition to his parents, Verlin's sister, Pearl Henry, brother, Ray Dills, and brother Lester Dills, all of Franklin, precedeased him. He also had infant brother who predeceased him in the 1920's during the severe flu epidemic. Verlin enjoyed bluegrass music and learned to play the guitar and banjo during his teen years. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (the "CC Camp") in the 1930's during the Great Depression and was stationed at Smokemont where he helped build the Great Smoky Mountains National Park ("GSMNP"). Verlin was the second oldest member of Cherryfield Baptist Church. Verlin's carpentry expertise included furniture such as bedroom suites, coffee/end tables, curio cabinets, hutches, kitchen cabinetry, lamps, rocking chairs, grandfather clocks, and a host of other items through the years. Other interests included gardening and sharing his goods at the local Tailgate Market, as well as hunting, fishing and camping. Funeral services will be held at Cherryfield Baptist Church on Sunday, February 20, at 2:00 p.m., with burial following in Pisgah Gardens.
