James Glenis McCall, 85 of Lake Toxaway, NC passed away peacefully at home in the company of family on October 9, 2021.
He was born August 6, 1936 in the Silversteen community to father, Joseph Harlow McCall and mother, Alma Hall McCall. He spent most of his childhood years in the Quebec community. He possessed an extremely strong work ethic and started work logging at a very young age. Some of his fondest memories were of working with his father, brother, and local men of the area.
At age 19, he volunteered for the Army and served with the 101st Airborne division during the Korean War. Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, he went to upstate New York to operate heavy equipment during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. He returned home to marry his childhood sweetheart, Martha Ann Thomas, on May 26, 1957. He graduated from the Nashville Auto Diesel College and started a very diverse career- most of which consisted of self-employment in the grading and concrete pumping trades. He was perhaps best known for his uncanny ability to operate trucks and machinery of any sort, particularly in the land grading business. He was more than once described as an artist for his ability to operate earth moving equipment.
In 1987, he converted the family farm into "Riverbend Campground" in Lake Toxaway and there, he and Martha developed many friendships with people from all over the country- many of which are active today. Glenis possessed a very adventurous spirit and was always up for what he described as "windshield time". He and Martha enjoyed touring on motorcycles and for decades, they logged countless long-distance motorcycle trips with family and friends.
Upon retirement and swapping motorcycles for campers and off-road vehicles, he and Martha (in the company of brother and sister-in-law, Clinton and Carolyn Owen and several others) made 23 consecutive summertime trips- ranging from Alaska and Canada, to the Colorado Rockies- completing the last trip to Colorado in July of this year. Glenis was also an eternal optimist who found pleasure in helping others. He was quoted hundreds of times to say "you can never go wrong in trying to help someone". He was a simple man with a kind heart and quick enduring smile and had a confident faith in his Lord Jesus, who led him home peacefully.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Thomas McCall of Lake Toxaway; daughter, Sharon Gantt and husband Joe (deceased) of Greenville SC; son, James "Bo" McCall and wife, Jo Ann of Lake Toxaway; granddaughter, Ivey Gantt Rappold of Buffalo, NY; grandsons, Maxwell Thomas Gantt and Robert Cray McCall and granddaughter, Caitlin Ann McCall; great grandsons, Max and Luke Rappold, Mason, Thomas, and Jamison Gantt; and great granddaughter, Grace Rappold, along with several loving nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life Sunday, October 24, 2021 from 2 until 5 pm at the Lake Toxaway Community Center, 81 Slick Fisher Road. Light refreshments will be served.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Shriners Children's Hospital, 950 W. Faris Rd, Greenville, SC 29605.
