Brevard – James S. Schanck, 86, passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at his residence.
A native of Chester, NY, he was the son of the late Rollin Neal Schanck and Katharine O'Connell Schanck. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving during WW II and he was retired from Nabisco. Mr. Schanck was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, and participated in the Transylvania County Rec. Dept. Senior Games and Relay for Life.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Joyce; sister-in-law, Janice of Brevard; children, Jimmy and wife Kathy of New Mexico, Kevin and wife Jane of Oklahoma, Karen and husband Jim of New Jersey, Keith and wife Betty of New York, Douglas and wife Christine of Florida, Janice and husband Jerry of Colorado, Eileen and husband Kevin of North Carolina, and Sally and husband James of North Carolina; sister, Betty of New York; 21 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 am Monday, August 13, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Father Patrick Toole officiating. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium with military rites conducted by the North Carolina National Guard and the Honor Guard for Veterans of Transylvania County. A reception will be held immediately following the services in the church fellowship hall.
