Brevard - Janice Evans Hinkle passed away at her home October 10, 2015 after an extended battle with cancer. She was 78. Jan was born in Boothwyn, Pennsylvania on February 26, 1937 to Russell and Helen Evans. Her family moved to Newark, Delaware during her senior year of High School where she met George Hinkle. They married February 25, 1956 in Newark where they lived until moving to Brevard in 1969. Jan was an artist in the yard, in the kitchen and on canvas. She has helped organize the Morgan Heights neighborhood where she was often seen out in her yard tending to her flowers and harassing anything that looked like a weed. She was a master in the kitchen as well, cooking up her special recipes. Many knew her as The Gingerbread Lady for her yearly gifts of homemade gingerbread men. She was a long term member of the Transylvania Art Guild and she began painting later in life and enjoyed sharing her work and learning from others. She was honored with a Gold Medal in the NC Senior Games for one of her oil paintings. Surviving are her children Cheryl Hinkle of Raleigh, Steve Hinkle and his wife Christi of Durham, and Jeff Hinkle and his wife Ginger of Mills River. She has five grandchildren: Jenny Hinkle Elliott and her husband Chris, David Hinkle and his wife Kara, Brad Hinkle, Gabe Hinkle and Julian Hinkle and one great grandchild, Maddie Elliott. The funeral service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, October 14, 2015 in the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Transylvania County Hospice.
