Jean DuBois Pitcher Anyone who missed getting to know Jean Pitcher, missed a treat. Ms. Pitcher, teacher, veteran, mother, photographer, wood carver and philanthropist, said farewell on June 11, 2015, after a long and eventful 97 years on this earth. Jean was born in Brooklyn on January 30, 1918 to Lewis Braislin Pitcher and Irene DuBois Pitcher. She grew up in Ridgewood, NJ, earning a BA (Education) from Skidmore College ('40). In 1942, she enlisted in the US Navy and served until 1945 as a LT(jg) teaching health and recreation to Navy WAVES at Bethesda. She retired in 1975, moving to Westhampton Beach, NY, but continued her photography, concentrating on nature, especially the coastal birds. Jean settled in Fernandina Beach, FL, in 1994. Throughout her long life, Jean was generous in her support of many organizations. The Nature Conservancy, Fresh Air Fund, Southern Poverty Law Center and the Arthritis Foundation and numerous others benefitted from her generosity. Local Brevard organizations that received support from Jean included Boys & Girls Club, the Neighbors in Ministry Rise & Shine Program and the Humane Society.
