Brevard - Joan Rebecca Johnson Smith, age 89, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 21, 2022. She was born on November 18, 1932, in Mt. Holly, NJ. She was the eldest daughter of the late Randolph and Rebecca Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, Randolph Johnson, Jr., and two sons-in-law, Richard C. Morris, Jr and R. Gary Gillespie. In 1973, she and her husband, Richard, moved their family to Brevard, NC. She was employed with Olin Corporation from 1974 to 1986. Later in 1986, she accepted the position of Clerk of Superior Court in Transylvania County. She retired from the state in 1998. Joan was a member of First Baptist Church of Brevard, where she served as treasurer of her Sunday School class. In the words of many who knew her, she was a precious lady and a beautiful soul. She will be greatly missed by her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her loving husband of 69 years, Richard F. Smith, Sr, son Richard F. Smith, Jr (Andrea), daughters Barbara (Bobi) Gillespie, Patricia Cooper (Charlie) and Jo Sprouse (Eddie), six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, sisters, Virginia Carpenter (Jim) and Geraldine Cheesman (Robert), sister-in-law, Margaret Johnson and several beloved nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held 2:30pm Sunday, May 1, 2022 at First Baptist Church in Brevard, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
