Brevard - John Edward McJunkin, 92, died December 26, 2022, after a period of declining health. A native of Brevard, he was born on November 11, 1930, to Albert and Rena Allison McJunkin. He was married to Barbara Jane Patelidas McJunkin for 51 years prior to her death in 2008.
He was a 1949 graduate of Brevard High School and served as Sgt First Class Infantry in the US Army in Korea from February 1951 to November 1952. Upon his return, he began working at Olin Corporation, retiring from there as an analytical chemist in 1992.
For many years, he was a member of Glady Branch Baptist Church, serving in numerous capacities, including deacon. He was devoted throughout his life to serving his family, church, and community. He had been a member of Pisgah Forest Baptist Church in later years. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved gardening, hiking, hunting, and fishing.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Jim, Joe, Charlie, and Sam McJunkin; two sisters: Adell Gillespie and Elsie Keith; a son-in-law, John S. Cochelin.
Surviving are two children: Cathy M. Cochelin, Kenneth E. (Leigh Anne) McJunkin; three grandsons: Jacob McJunkin, James (Chantel) McJunkin, Daniel McJunkin; two great grandchildren: Annistyn Vick and Aven McJunkin.
A celebration of life with military honors will be held at 1 pm Saturday, December 31 at Little River Baptist Church with the Rev. Marc Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the NC Baptist Children's Home.
