Julia Jordan Winchester, 103, died Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Givens Estates Health Center in Asheville.
The youngest child of Thomas Hayden Jordan and Sallie Osteen Jordan, Julia was born on July 2, 1920, in the Calvert section of Transylvania County. She lived there throughout her life. She graduated from Rosman High School and was a lifelong member of Mt. Moriah Calvert Baptist Church.
On November 27, 1941, Julia married Dewey S. Winchester, and they shared 65 years together until his death in 2006. Other family members who preceded her in death were her parents, her stepfather Judson L. Plott, her sisters Naomi, Josephine, and Ruth, and her brothers Thomas and Sam.
Survivors include her three daughters and their husbands, Delores and Tom Stroup, Paula Margaret and Lee Schleining, and Anita and John Boggs; four grandchildren, Christopher Thomas Stroup (Lori), Timothy Lee Schleining (Jennifer), Sally Boggs Greene (Danny), and Rebekah Boggs Allison (Collin); and six great-grandchildren, Felix Schleining, Grayson Greene, Jenna Greene, Chloe Greene, Lincoln Allison and Luke Allison.
A celebration of life and receiving of friends will be held at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests charitable donations be made to Mt. Moriah Cemetery Fund, c/o Mr. Jimmy Whitmire, Box 806 Whitmire Rd., Brevard, NC 28712, or Children's Home Society of North Carolina, 604 Meadow St., Greensboro, NC 27405.
