Brevard - June Person, beloved wife and mother, died suddenly August 26, 2021 at her home.
June, age 87, was an exceptionally warm-hearted, and generous person who was interested in the people around her and in her community.
June Mercer Keir was born to William and Opal Marie Keir in Chicago, Illinois, on May 16, 1934, the second of three children. When she was 12 years old, the family moved to LaGrange, a Chicago suburb. After attending DePauw University in Indiana for two years, she went downstate to the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, from which she received her bachelor's degree with a major in French. At college she met the love of her life, Conrad Person, and they wed on July 7, 1956. The couple made their home in LaGrange and together they had four children: Laura, Susan, Donald, and David. June was a housewife; Conrad worked for Commonwealth Edison. Upon Conrad's retirement, the couple moved in 1996 to a much-loved home in the mountain community Sherwood Forest in Brevard, North Carolina. A few years ago, June and Conrad moved to the retirement community College Walk, also in Brevard.
June's most avid hobby was duplicate bridge. In fact, June and Conrad met when he offered to give her and a friend a ride to a bridge tournament. She had several successful bridge partnerships over the years, the most enduring and successful being the one with Conrad. June attained the high ACBL rank of Gold Life Master and taught bridge at community schools.
Food was a source of joy to June, and cooking was a major creative outlet. She was way ahead of her 50's peers in preparing delicious fresh vegetables. One favorite family dish she cooked was Jambalaya, and the family would sing the Hank Williams song "Jambalaya" while she made it.
June also loved theater, art, travel, nature walks, and reading. She read aloud many hours to each of her children, bestowing on each a deep appreciation of books.
Survivors include her husband and children; her two grandchildren, Gus and Janista Person; and her sister, Winifred Weaver. She is predeceased by her brother, Yates Keir.
