LaVerne Smith Moore, 82, of the Quebec Community passed peacefully October 1, 2021 into the arms of her Lord and Savior after a prolonged illness. LaVerne was born in Transylvania County March 11, 1939, where she lived her entire life, except for 1956-1957 when she resided in Killeen, Texas while her husband Gerald was stationed there in the Army.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas A. "Jack" Smith and Drucilla R. Smith. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Gerald, of the home; son Stanley and wife Denise of Weaverville; grandson Bradley and wife Heather of Durham (great-granddaughter, Evie Grace, expected in November) and grandson Jacob of Greensboro; sister Betty Patterson of Quebec; and several nieces and nephews all of whom she loved dearly.
LaVerne loved her family and her church. Her great love of music was always evident as she played the piano and organ at Oak Grove Baptist Church for many years until her health issues prevented her from doing so. She also served in many positions in the church throughout the years. Her great love for music, and gospel music in particular, was evident as she could always be expected to be singing and clapping along. She never forgot a birthday, holiday or anniversary and could be counted on to send cards at least a week early - usually with the words underlined to emphasize her love. She served as both president and treasurer at various times for the Quebec Community Club and was always involved in their many functions including monthly Bingos. She loved to play Bingo and was also known to "call" from time-to-time. She baked delicious lemon pies that were eagerly sought after and often were the first items sold-out at the Club activities.
She spent many years employed as a Chiropractic Assistant in Brevard where her big smile and heart always welcomed patients. She met and befriended many people throughout those years and loved the social aspect of her job. LaVerne was a "people person" and never met a stranger. She could learn a lot about a person in just a short period of time and gained many life-long friends as a result. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends but never forgotten.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Lake Toxaway where the body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Masks are suggested indoors but not required. Many thanks to her caregivers over the last several months who aided her and her family during her extended illness. Condolences can be made in the form of donations to the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
