Brevard – Lewis Denton Gravley, 94, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 6, 2013.
Born in Brevard on Israel Rd. on February 17, 1918, he was the son of the late Luther Benjamin Gravley and Mary Josephine "Dolly" Cassell Gravley. He is also preceded in death by his son, Philip Gravley; three sisters, Lily Blackwell, Edith Redd, and Janie Whitmire; two half-sisters, Jessie Mann and Marie Raines; two brothers, Monroe Gravley and Leo Gravley.
Lewis was an avid hunter and gardener who thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Gladys Mull Gravley; two sons, Denton Gravley and his wife Donna of Brevard, and Jerry Gravley of Chama, New Mexico; five grandchildren, Lara Turner of Clyde, NC, Pamela Taylor of Columbia, SC, Josh Gravley of Fletcher, NC, and Joseph and Julie Gravley of Brevard; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Grace and Mary Beth Turner, Rory Taylor, and Colton Gravley.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 9, 2013 in the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Aiken officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Connestee Cemetery near Dunn's Rock Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation, 3614 J. Dewey Gray Circle, Building C, Augusta, GA 30909. On November 23rd, Lewis suffered burns on his leg requiring multiple trips to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, GA. The hospitality and care of the burn victims and their families by this organization through the Chavis House was a blessing to the Gravleys.
