Obituary

Lois Lucille Goetz, age 91, died Monday October 15, 2012 after a period of declining health. She had recently resided in the Hotel Iowa, then Montrose Health Center before moving to Cedar Mountain House in Brevard. She was born January 12, 1921 in Keokuk, IA to the late Clifford Kellogg Biddenstadt and the late Lora Agnes Rhum. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband James (Jim) Goetz, her brother Clifford Keith, a sister, Doris Rosalyn and a granddaughter, Dana Goetz. Lois was descended from Ernst Julius Bueddenstadt who was born in Germany in 1831, and his wife, Caroline "Carrie" Harms. They immigrated to the U.S. via New Orleans in 1851 and settled in Keokuk shortly after Iowa achieved statehood in 1848. They raised five children who generated numerous Biddenstadt branches of life-long Keokuk residents. A passionate gardener, Lois volunteered to maintain a flower bed in Rand Park and had elaborate gardens when she was living at home. She also had a craving to read and learn. She took continuing education at the community college and accumulated enough hours to earn her Associates Degree. She and Jim participated in numerous Elderhostel trips where she would endeavor to learn more about the culture of people in other parts of the world. She worked as a medical librarian for over twenty years at St. Joseph's Hospital until retiring. Lois and her husband Jim were married on April 17, 1941. They had two sons; Geoffrey and wife Joan, of Brevard, NC, and David, and wife Kay, of Port Townsend, WA. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Christine Ditmore, Tracy Averette and Mark Goetz, and seven great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Jack Goetz and wife Mary Ann; sister-in-law Genevieve Miller; Meme Schrag, and beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Plans for a Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the St. Paul United Church of Christ Wednesday Family Night Program
