Lois Pauline "Polly" Shimrak (nee Shepard) age 98 passed away on September 28, 2021, in Givens Estates, Asheville, NC. Polly was born in Bakerstown, PA on April 25, 1923, to John and Maybelle Shepard. She was predeceased by her husband George, brother Jack Shepard and sister Shirley Osborne. Polly is survived by sons Raymond (Rosemarie) of North Port, FL, and John (Deniece) of Berwyn, PA and six grandchildren, Christine Toth (Thomas), Lisa Rogers (Jason), Jennifer Schulz (Mark) Gigi Smarra, Holly Kaiser (Edgar) and Joshua (deceased) (Kristy). Polly was also great grandmother to sixteen and great great grandmother to four.
Polly grew up in Valencia, PA and graduated from Mars High School in 1940 where she was an honor student and a speaker and soloist at her graduation ceremonies. She attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA where she was Treasurer of her class. At Geneva she met George, later married, and started a family. Polly and George were married for 65 years and moved in their early career with the Pennsylvania Railroad to Cleveland, OH, Metuchen, NJ and eventually to Bryn Mawr, PA. During her moves Polly served on many Methodist church committees including Chairman of the Commission on Missions and President of the Methodist Women. While living in Bryn Mawr Polly enrolled in Immaculata College, Immaculata, PA to continue her formal studies. She was named to dean's list honors numerous times and eventually received a BS degree in Home Economics & Dietetics from Immaculata in 1982. In Bryn Mawr, Polly and George attended the Wayne Presbyterian Church where Polly was active in many church functions. They enjoyed traveling to Europe, Asia, and various locations throughout the United States.
Polly was known to sew beautiful gifts for her five granddaughters and to be an avid gardner, reader and quilter. She also enjoyed cooking and preparing large family dinners.
In 1985 Polly and George retired and moved to Brevard, NC living in Sherwood Forest. Polly continued her hobbies while becoming proficient in quilting and was an active member of the Western North Carolina Quilters Guild and served as a member if its Board. Polly was active in the Sherwood community and the First United Methodist Church.
Polly and George moved to Givens Estates in 2002. Polly continued her volunter service at Givens serving on the Givens Resident Council, Chair and Co-Chair of Dining Services, Staff Appreciation Committee, and the Re-Accreditation Committee for Givens.
