Obituary

Lyle P. Reedy, 81, of Brevard, North Carolina passed away at home on the morning of June 27, 2023 with his wife and daughters by his side. Lyle was born at home in Judson, Indiana on June 13, 1942 to Charles Leonard and Naomi Alberta Collings Reedy. He was preceded in death by his elder sister Doris Lucille, who died in infancy, his parents, and his younger brothers Roy and Earl. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sandra, daughters Libby Ray (John) of Waynesville and Heather Reedy of Brevard, grandsons Christopher Ray and Aaron Ray, his sister Naomi Allee, and many nieces and nephews.

Lyle was a sixth generation farmer. He avidly participated in 4-H and FFA in his youth, winning various tractor and sheep-shearing competitions. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural science from Purdue University. Following graduation, he served as an Indiana Extension Service agricultural agent for a year before becoming an analytical chemist with Olin Corporation in Covington. He was transferred to the Olin/Ecusta paper mill in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina in 1983, where he worked until the plant abruptly closed in 2002.

Lyle had numerous interests and pastimes throughout his life, all of which he enjoyed sharing with others. These included gardening, photography, producing maple syrup and molasses, listening to and playing traditional bluegrass, and handcrafting violins, a passion he pursued for roughly 30 years.

To those who knew him best, Lyle was a perfectionist, down-to-earth, inquisitive, and resourceful. He knew no strangers. He gave his children and many who knew him the invaluable commodities of time and interest. He overcame the traumatic loss of his left hand at age 28 as the result of a farming accident and never hinted to the world that there was something he could not do because of it. While others marveled at his courage and tenacity, he maintained that there was nothing extraordinary about him or any of his accomplishments.

Per Lyle's wishes, there is no memorial service planned at this time. Donations, if desired, may be made to Care Partners Hospice of Brevard in Lyle's honor.

Lyle's family wishes to thank the staff of Transylvania Regional Hospital, particularly those in Admissions and the Infusion Room, as well as Dr. Albert Quiery and everyone at Mission Medical Oncology who accompanied Lyle on a long, difficult journey. Last but not least, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Care Partners of Brevard for their kindness and caring during the last few months of Lyle's life. You were all angels in the guise of humans, and we will not forget.
