Obituary

Marshall Edwin Whitmire, age 86, died December 20, 2024, after a period of declining health.

Marshall was born September 30, 1938, to the late Ed and Louise Whitmire. On August 7,1960, Marshall married June Monteith Whitmire. They were happily married for over 61 years, until her death in February 2022. In addition to his parents and his wife, Marshall was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Ned and Ann Whitmire.

Marshall was a lifelong resident of Transylvania County, graduating from Brevard High School in

1956. He then started his career at Ecusta Paper Manufacturing. He later joined the United States Air Force and served for 4 years. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, he returned to Ecusta, where he remained until he retired in 2001. Marshall was a millwright machinist in Ecusta's maintenance department and had thorough knowledge of most of the paper machines in the plant. Marshall was faithful to the Lord, serving as a Sunday school teacher and deacon, and was a member of various committees throughout the church.

Marshall loved his family and especially enjoyed camping with them. He and June spent many vacations in their favorite camping spot, Smokemont, in the Great Smoky Mountains near Cherokee, NC. in addition to camping, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He spent many hours in his shop working on projects. He loved showing his grandchildren how to use the riding lawn mower, as well as taking them for rides on his moped.

Marshall is survived by his children, Sheila Whitmire, Jennifer Evans and her husband Kevin, and Christopher Whitmire. He is also survived by his much loved grandchildren, Courtney Whitmire, Heath Evans and his wife Catherine, and Josie Evans. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Maxine Starner and her husband Mark. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 P..M. on Monday, January 13, 2025, in the chapel of Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.
