Martha Huffman Stamey, 93, of Brevard, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville.
Born in Asheville, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Ruth Hatchett Huffman. Her father worked for the U.S. Forest Service, and her mother, a former schoolteacher, instilled in her five daughters—Martha, her twin Mary, Betty, Louise, and Ann—a lifelong love of learning. Growing up in several locations within Pisgah National Forest, including Turkey Pen Gap and Busick near Mount Mitchell, the girls learned the names of the birds, trees, and flowers that surrounded their homes.
Martha moved with her parents to Brevard in 1952 following her father’s retirement. It was there that she met Jerry Stamey, a Brevard native. The two married in 1959 and welcomed one daughter, Susan.
Active in her community, Martha was a past member of the Brevard Jaycettes, the Brevard Business and Professional Women’s Club, and the City of Brevard Historical Society. She served as president of the Transylvania Hospital Auxiliary in 1984 and dedicated three years of service to the Transylvania Social Services Board.
Professionally, Martha worked as a bookkeeper for the local Ford dealership and later served as office manager for The Transylvania Times.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan; her twin sister, Mary Osborne; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard on Thursday, January 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A private burial will take place at a later date at Gillespie Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Brevard.
