Mary Elizabeth Burrell Mendlowitz Sapphire – Mary Elizabeth Mendlowitz, 84, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 21, 2010. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas Burrell and Roxie Galloway Burrell. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Nina Smith, Beatrice Burrell, an infant sister, a brother, James Arthur Burrell, and a grandson, John Daniel Burrell, Jr. She was a member of North Toxaway Baptist Church and was active with the Sapphire Community Center. Surviving are her sons, John Daniel Burrell, Sr. and wife Nancy, and Sid Mendlowitz and wife Penny all of Lake Toxaway; daughter, Genevieve Baxley and husband Allen of Cumming, GA; brothers, William Burrell and wife Martha and Christopher Columbus Burrell all of Lake Toxaway; sisters, Ollie Reese and husband Leslie and Helen Brown all of Sapphire; Gladys McCall and husband Eldon of Lake Toxaway, and Virginia Long and husband Bruce of Salem, SC grandchildren, Julie Miller, David Mendlowitz, and Jimmy Burrell; six great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, August 26, 2010 at North Toxaway Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Mullis officiating. Burial will be in North Toxaway Baptist Church Cemetery.
