Mary J Smith, age 83, of Brevard, North Carolina, passed away peacefully January 16, 2026, surrounded by loving friends and family. Born July 28, 1942, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Mary lived a life identified by faith, service, and devotion to family.

Mary lived a life identified by faith, service, and devotion to family. Mary was a devoted wife and mother of five, raising her children with unwavering love and guiding them to become honorable and productive members of society. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her home—she was a devout Catholic who taught catechism for more than 25 years at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard. Mary loved sharing the gospel and working with children, leaving a lasting impression on generations of young learners.

After graduating high school in Terre Haute Indiana, Mary chose to serve her country by joining the United States Air Force in the 1964. She served faithfully for four years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Her time in the Air Force reflected her commitment to duty, honor, and country. In 1965 Mary met and married her husband Ron at Eglin Air Force Base Florida. They were both transferred to Spain where they served until release from active duty in April 1968.

Mary’s creativity and generosity touched many lives. While raising her children, she received volunteer of the year award from Straus Elementary. Mary was a volunteer costume designer during the 90’s for Theater Arts at Brevard High School, enriching the school’s cultural life. Her selflessness and dedication made her a beloved figure in the community. Mary will be remembered for her deep faith, her love for teaching, and her gentle, giving nature. She embodied kindness and humility, always putting others before herself.

Mary is survived by her loving family in Brevard, Husband Ron of 60 years, children Dayna, Dillion (Karen) Devon and Daric and finance Brandy and two grandchildren Logan and Lane Smith. Mary was predeceased by her infant daughter Sara Elizabeth Smith. Her surviving family in Terre Haute consists of her sister-in-law Jannet John and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by both parents, sister Annie King, brothers Pete and Terry Lee John.
