Mary Lou Chapman Tennis, 76 of Lake Toxaway went home to celebrate Christmas with the Lord on December 15, 2011. Born May 27, 1935 in Rosman, NC, she was the daughter of the late Phillip Edmund and Mary Ethel McCall Chapman. She graduated from Rosman High School in 1952. She lived much of her life in the Hampton/Newport News, VA area where she worked as an Administrative Assistant. She returned to Transylvania County and continued her work here until she retired. She continued to do Medical Transcription until recently when she became ill. She served as church treasurer of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Lake Toxaway where she was a member. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by six sisters; Lola C. Owen, Otha C. Owen, Envalee C. O'Shields Galloway, Victoria C. Gate, Frances C. Nicholson and Verdary C. Owen. She was also predeceased by two brothers; Edward Chapman and Everette Chapman as well as an ex-husband, Frank Owen. Survivors include her brother, Elzie G. Chapman of Brevard, an ex-husband and very special friend, William Tennis of Hampton, VA and many many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews who all loved her very much. She will be remembered mostly for her love and devotion to her family, her church family and her friends. Her loving family was devoted to her and took care of her up until she was admitted to The Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the loving and caring staff of The Elizabeth House, Transylvania Regional Hospital, Transylvania Hospice and Doctors James Kelling and Shane Foster. The family will receive friends on Monday December 19, 2011 from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow at 3:00 PM. Interment will be in The Whitmire Cemetery following the service with the Reverend Steve Boley, her pastor and friend officiating.
