Cpl. Matthew James Kirby, 28, of Pisgah Forest passed away Saturday, June 23. 2012. He was born February 25, 1984 in Transylvania County to his parents James R. "Jim" Kirby and Judy G. Kirby of Pisgah Forest. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Lawrence Joe Bob and Artie Mae Kirby, Jr. and James and Faye Guffey. After graduating from Brevard High School, Matthew attended Blue Ridge Community college before joining the U.S. Army where he served two tours to Iraq with the 546 Maintenance Company out of Ft. Polk, Louisiana. Survivors include his parents, James R. "Jim" and Judy G. Kirby; great-uncle Ray Talley and wife Gertrude of Etowah, uncles Danny Guffey and wife Tracy of Canton, Joe Bob Kirby and wife Eva of Brevard, and David and Elaine Winfrey of Diboll, TX; and cousins Michelle Wilson and husband Scott, Michael Joe Kirby and wife April, and Brandi Guffey. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Saturday June 30, 2012 at Pisgah Forest Baptist Church, with Rev. David Spray officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made either to The Gideons or to the Wounded Warrior Fund.
