Obituary

Norman Wilbur Eckhardt, 92, of Brevard, NC passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at his home at College Walk.

He was predeceased by his parents, John Raymond Eckhardt and Lorita Gerber Eckhardt, and his brothers Jack Eckhardt and Marsh Eckhardt.

Mr. Eckhardt is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Jean Gertrude Call Eckhardt,

formerly of Niagara Falls, NY  whom he met in college; his sons, Norman Wilbur Eckhardt, Jr. and wife Patricia of Columbia, SC, Carl John Eckhardt and wife Anita of Houston, TX, and his daughter, Laura A. E. Colaninno and husband Andrew of Flowery Branch, GA; five grandchildren and one great grandson.

Mr. Eckhardt was born on September 10, 1917 in Rochester, NY. He attended Hobart College in Geneva, NY and graduated with a math and physics degree. He served in the United States Marine Corps for three years in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon completion of service he attained the rank of Major.

Following his military service Mr. Eckhardt worked in sales and management in the telephone and electronics industries.

Mr. Eckhardt and his wife, Jean moved to Transylvania County when he retired and were owners of the Red Door Restaurant in Lake Toxaway for ten years. He was an active member and deacon of the Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church. He was also an active member of the Brevard Elks Lodge #1768 and a founding member of the Brevard Antique Car Club.

Memorial services will be held on April 30, 2010 at 11:30 AM at the Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation Gift Processing Administrator, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA 22172.
