IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter Bende
Juhl
May 27, 1935 – October 22, 2023
Peter Bende Juhl, 88, passed away on October 22nd, 2023. He was born in Fords, New Jersey, the only son of Frances and Bende Juhl. He is survived by two sisters: Dorothy Furdock of St. Augustine, Florida and Hester Chinchar of Lewes, Delaware.
With his first wife, Patricia Maguire, he had two daughters: Pamela Ann Sokoler of Colts Neck, NJ, and Ann Patricia McNeilly of Pleasanton, California. There are four grown grandchildren, two grandsons and two granddaughters. He is survived by Carol Ann Juhl, his loving and devoted wife of 39 years.
Peter served in the Army during the Korean War. With the help of the GI bill he graduated from Rutgers University. He went on to Union College and earned a masters degree in mechanical engineering. He then mastered out of a PhD program in mechanical engineering at RPI in Troy, New York. He worked in the Schenectady, New York General Electric plant specializing in power generation/gas turbines. He also worked for the Knolls Atomic Laboratory in New York under the auspices of GE. While at GE, he started and directed the International Modal Conferences in coordination with Union College. He was very proud of the conferences that continue to this day. There are engineers and professors from all over the world who attend. Peter was a member and officer of Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honor society.
Pete was a quiet man, a good listener and an avid reader (he even read the cereal boxes at breakfast.) He had a great sense of humor which endeared him to others. When he retired, he took up drawing. He taught himself and made a beautiful and varied portfolio. Peter also enjoyed researching the family genealogy. He had a book printed following his research. This helped him reconnect with his family in Denmark. He and Carol enjoyed traveling to Denmark, Europe, China, Japan and Australia.
The family would like to thank Jessica and Monica of Hospice for the loving care they gave Peter and me at our home and Tores Home in Brevard. A white dogwood tree will be planted in Peter's memory near the gazebo at College Walk. Contributions are welcome.
Peter's ashes will be interred at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain on Thursday, November 2nd. The following day there will be an honor guard ceremony at the Moody-Connolly Chapel at 1:00 PM.
