Sapphire - Richard Lee Harness, 77, died peacefully on July 10, 2024, at VA Valor Hospice House in Asheville, NC.

Richard was born on November 1, 1946, in Wright, AR, to Ray Jackson and Virginia Lee (Eason) Harness, who preceded him in death. He was the brother of Kelly Harness and Ray Harness, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by his sisters Ellen Talley and Vicki McClendon and his brother James Harness.

Richard married his beloved wife, Linda, in 1971, and they enjoyed 53 years together. He is survived by Linda, their son, Chad, and daughter-in-law, Catherine, and their grandchildren, Jackson and Esme.

Richard honorably served his country in the U.S. Army from 1964-1967. He completed three tours of duty as a door gunner in Vietnam, receiving numerous awards, including the Purple Heart. He later had a twenty-seven year real estate and insurance career and was known for his dedication and integrity.

Richard enjoyed gardening, woodworking, riding his Harley, Bible studies, and enjoying the mountains with Linda. He was a member of Cashiers United Methodist Church, where he occasionally served as a lay reader.

A memorial service will be held at Cashiers United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Richard's memory.

Richard will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
