Obituary

Roland L. Owens, 80, of Brevard, NC gained his wings on September 12, 2025, at The Oaks in Brevard, ending a full and wonderful life of 80 years.

Roland spent 3 years in service to his country in the Army and was deployed in Vietnam until his honorable discharge in 1969 due to medical injury that caused him to lose his right eye after his tanker truck ran over a land mine. Roland received a Purple Heart for his sacrifice in the line of duty.

Roland worked for Public Works, City of Brevard, for 40 years between 1972 – 2012 when he retired. He was an appreciated and dedicated Public Works employee. He was well known in the Brevard community.

In 1967 he married Etta L. Raines, whom he remained married to for 58 years, until he gained his wings. They raised 2 children and were blessed with 2 grandchildren.

Roland was a longtime member and Deacon at Brevard Freewill Baptist Church, now renamed Crossroads Baptist Church, where he loved Saturday night gospel singings, listening to preaching and attending most Sunday and Wednesday services. He also helped with the Manna food program at the church.

Roland is preceded in death by his mother and father, Callie and Kendall Owens.

He is survived by his beloved wife Etta Owens, his daughters Sherry Eubanks and Kelly O'Rourke, Sons-in-law, James Eubanks and Brian O'Rourke and grandchildren Mason O'Rourke and Spencer O'Rourke.

Those of you who knew him will remember his kindness and how he has touched countless lives with his gentle spirit and giving heart. Some of you will know how much he enjoyed woodworking, building model cars and fixing old lawnmowers as a hobby. He was a race car fan, whether it was building one in his younger days or watching the races on TV, while rooting for Richard Petty. He enjoyed researching ancestry and going out to eat. He will always be loved by many and will truly be missed by family, friends and his community. His legacy will live on in our hearts.

The family will receive visitors this Friday, September 19, 2025, from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be in the Moody-Connolly chapel at 2:00 PM. The family and friends will then proceed to the Blue Ridge Garden of Memory for a graveside service. The funeral will include Military Honors for his service with the Army.

Friends and Family are welcome to bring food or stop by for a visit at Roland's home.
