Roy Woodrow Gillespie age 89, of Cedar Mountain died Friday April 20 , 2012 at Transylvania Regional Hospital. He was born May 30, 1922 in Transylvania County to the late Louie Gillespie and Niola Wilson Gillespie.
He was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the two Purple Hearts, WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Medal and the EAME Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. He landed with Allied Troops on D-Day at Normandy and was in the Battle of The Bulge.
Mr. Gillespie loved to play the Banjo, Harmonica and any other musical instrument.
Survivors include his wife Genevieve, two sons; Roy Gillespie of Hendersonville and Larry Gillespie of Bryson City, two daughters; Ann Surrette of Fayetteville and Jackie Faye DeLong of Natile VA. Two grandsons; Larry Gillespie of Cedar Mountain and Gary Peacock of Little River, five granddaughters; Michelle Surrette of Kitty Hawk NC, Donna Gillespie and Nancy Owens both of Hendersonville, Melody Gillespie of Greer SC and Rose Davis of Cedar Mountain. six great grandchildren; Jasmine, Kyleigh and Mason Gillespie, Leah and Drake Davis and Ashley Peacock.
Graveside services With Military Honors were held at 2:00pm Monday April 23, 2012 at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory conducted by Rev. Larry Wilson and Rev. Gary Peacock.
