Obituary

Stuart White Rabb, Jr., age 93, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Catharine (Cassie) and granddaughters Eleanor Arwen Rabb Potter and Diana Blake Rabb Potter, both of Chapel Hill, and numerous nieces and nephews. Catharine currently resides at Brooks-Howell Home in Asheville. Their daughter, Margaret Yarborough Rabb, passed away in January 2010. Mr. Rabb was a 1938 graduate of University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and a veteran of World War II when he served in the OSS. He was also a print and radio journalist and editor, worked in sales for Norris Dispensers Corporation (Minneapolis), and later was an elementary school teacher in Lake Forest, Illinois. Mr. Rabb had some remarkable experiences during WWII. He became part of the Office of Strategic Services whose mission was to disrupt Germany's capacity to defend and make war on the European continent. Germany occupied all of continental Europe at the time. Stuart Rabb was sent to German-occupied France to work with French Resistance Groups (FFI). He participated in many missions against the Germans. He parachuted 14 times into hostile France. There were no helicopters in those days so he and others were flown out of France to England via small pastures aboard a small British aircraft called a Lysander. When the American OSS became larger, he was returned to American forces. Stuart was a modest and patriotic man. His WWII experiences were the stuff of sacrifices and patriotism. Later as a civilian, he became an inventor of sorts, particularly of practical consumer goods. While working for Norris, he invented a special milk bottle cap and container, for example. After retirement, Stuart was an avid trout fisherman and gardener (known for his raspberries and asparagus) and loved to travel to Austria. He will be missed by his numerous friends at Faith Memorial Chapel, Cedar Mountain, where he served as trustee for many years. Burial will be at St. Paul's-in-the-Valley Cemetery, Brevard, NC. There will be a gathering of friends to share remembrances and celebrate a "life well-lived" from 3-5 pm on September 29 in the chapel of Moody-Connolly Funeral Home at 181 South Caldwell St., Brevard. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to either Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain, NC or to St. Philip's Episcopal Church (317 East Main St., Brevard, NC 28712) would be appreciated. Condolences may be sent to his niece, Nancy M. Brown at 62 Forest Ave., Wyoming, OH 45215. Online condolences may be left at www.moodyconnollyfuneralhome.com.
