Obituary

Ms. Thelma Galloway Patterson passed away on May 1, 2012, after a long illness. Thelma was born March 14, 1918 and raised in Lake Toxaway and Rosman, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Meta Nicholson Galloway and Nath Sylvanus Galloway and sister of the late Ethel L. Jackson,(John), Belle, WV. She was also preceded in death by her niece DeMeta Jackson Jenkins, Cincinnati, OH. She was a lifelong resident of Transylvania County and member of the Rosman Methodist Church. Thelma was married for fifteen years to the late Ben Patterson. Thelma graduated valedictorian from Rosman High School at age sixteen. She received a degree in education from Cullowhee (Western Carolina Teacher's College) in 1939. Thelma continued her matriculation at Duke, University of North Carolina, and University of Wyoming to obtain a Master's in Art, Psychology and Education. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma, Honor Roll, Science Club, Student Senate, Vice President of Junior and Senior Class, Young Women's Auxiliary and Big Sister Club at Western Carolina Teacher's College. Thelma taught in public schools in Brevard and Rosman her entire career. She was Dean of Women at Brevard College. Thelma was known for her expertise in teaching and her absolutely beautiful classrooms. She enjoyed her family, flower gardens, genealogy, Highlands, and her many students. Ms. Patterson is survived by her two nieces, Johnna Jackson Snodgrass (Joe), Belle, WV, and Carolyn Jackson O'Dell (Max), Greensboro, NC, nephew in –law Phil Jenkins ( DeMeta Jackson – deceased), Cincinnati, OH, great nieces Shannon Snodgrass, Charleston, WV, and Suzanne Snodgrass, Charlotte, NC, and many other great nieces and nephews. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Dorene Holland for being such a dear friend to Thelma and her family. Services will be held Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 2 pm, in the Chapel of Moody Connolly Funeral Home, in Brevard with the Rev. Ann Self officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. The Committal Service will be in the Galloway Memorial Cemetery. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, contributions to the school of their choice in honor and memory of Thelma Galloway Patterson.
