Obituary

Thomas Hobart Avirett III Tommy Avirett, 60, of Lake Toxaway went home to be with the Lord on October 2nd 2016. He was born June 21st 1956 in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Thomas Avirett Jr. and Carolyn Avirett. He spent the majority of his childhood in Pompano Beach, FL, where he enjoyed surfing and playing tennis. After spending summers in Lake Toxaway, Tommy and his father, Tom, became the tennis Pros at Lake Toxaway Country Club. He later became a permanent resident when he met his wife, Renee', in 1984. The following year he became a Deputy Sheriff of Transylvania County, serving the community for 27 3/4 years. After retiring, he continued to work part time as bailiff at the courthouse. Always dedicated to his community, he also served in the Lake Toxaway Volunteer Fire Department for over 25 years. He was lovingly known as Daddy, Papaw, Magnum, Sarg and neighbor and was a man of faith. He was a friend to all and always willing to lift a helping hand to anyone in need without asking for anything in return. A lover of animals and nature, Tommy loved spending time outdoors on his farm. Whether it was watching the cattle, putting up hay, driving the golf cart or working on his tan while riding the tractor, he always had a pepsi and a smile on his face. He also loved his dogs, cats, and feeding the birds. He looked forward to family vacations camping at the beach or lake, where he could spend the whole day sitting on the beach or cruising the lake. He was passionate about many things but most of all he was passionate about his family. He was a caring son, dependable brother, devoted husband, proud father and loving grandfather. His mother, Carolyn Avirett, preceded him in death. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Tom and Katie Avirett of St. Petersburg, FL, his wife, Renee' Fisher Avirett of Lake Toxaway, his son Clayton Avirett and wife Tiffany of Lake Toxaway, his daughter Amy Mitchell and husband Mike of Franklin, TN, one grandson, Luke Mitchell of Franklin, TN, two sisters, Jamie George and husband Eddie of Flat Rock, NC and Chris Glassey and husband Jimmie of Bat Cave, NC, a dear friend, Gerald Meece and his family, along with numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 5th from 6-8pm at North Toxaway Baptist Church. The celebration of life service will be held Thursday, October 6th at 2pm at North Toxaway Baptist Church. Rev. David Dew will be officiating. Burial will follow at Lake Toxaway Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fisher Reunion Cemetery Fund. Checks can be made out to Fisher Reunion/Cemetery Fund and mailed to Jennifer Reid at 2502 Kim Miller Rd.
