Obituary

TOBY LEE POWELL November 9, 1968 - April 3, 2014 Toby Lee Powell, the son of Lee Powell, retired teacher and high school football coach, and Kathy Powell, mail carrier, was born and raised in Rosman, North Carolina and died unexpectedly from a heart attack on April 3, 2014. Toby, a 1987 graduate of Rosman High School, was raised in the mountains of Western North Carolina where he learned a strong work ethic. During his high school years, Toby spent his summers working the family Christmas tree farm and fishing with his brothers Aaron and Ryan in their Dad's Ranger fishing boat. The fall was dedicated to the football field where Toby was recognized as All Conference as lineman for Rosman "Tigers". After High School, Toby learned surveying as a rodman for a land survey company in 1988. This entry level position in the surveying field igniting into a passion that would develop into a full time construction career. Toby then became employed with Fluor Daniel where he served as a rodman, an instrument man, and a construction engineer. Projects completed included: Bad Creek Power Project, Union Camp in Eastover, SC, DuPont in Cedar Mountain, NC, Milliken Live Oak in LaGrange, GA, MEMC in Sherman, TX, a BMW plant in Greer, SC, Union Carbide Plant in Taft, LA, and DuPont Hytrel in Charleston, SC. While employed with Carolina Mountain Construction as project manager, Toby was responsible for constructing several bridges in Western North Carolina. Due to his management skills and mechanical abilities, Toby was requested to return to Duke Fluor Daniel as a Survey Party Chief for power projects in Odessa, TX, Sandersville, GA, and Blacksburg, SC and managed several turbine installations. While still employed by Fluor, Toby then served as a construction specialist for the Ritz Carlton Resort on the Grand Cayman Island and for Proctor & Gamble in Jackson, MO. Additionally, Toby was Survey Party Chief for the Oconee Nuclear Station in SC and served as a Construction Manager for Day & Zimmermann on projects in Pensacola, FL and Decatur, AL. At his passing, Toby was the Chief Surveyor for the Fluor / Dow Gulfstream Program, responsible for managing a large contingent of survey crews for three mega projects in Freeport, TX. Always proud of his crews and well respected by subordinates and supervisors alike, Toby will be greatly missed by those at work. Outside of work, Toby was dedicated family man who knew the true importance of family and the meaning of love for one another. Often spending multiple hours of driving to make one family diner or special event, Toby understood what being a husband, a father, and a son was all about. As a passionate fisherman, woodcraftsmen, and Clemson football fan, Toby always enjoyed and monopolized on any free time to spend with his wife, children, grandchild, or family. Toby is survived by Sally Powell, his wife of twenty three years, his son Noah, daughters Keri and Anna, grandson Rowyn, his parents Lee and Kathy Powell, and brothers Aaron and wife Michelle and their children, and Ryan and wife April and their children, paternal grandfather Coolidge Powell of Rosman, maternal grandmother Norma Raines of Rosman, and multiple extended family. Toby's Celebration of Life Event will be on Thursday, April 10th at 4 PM at Middlefork Baptist Church in Rosman, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers and Toby's passion for Clemson, there has been a memorial fund established to help Toby's son Noah achieve his goal of going to college at Clemson University. The address for the memorial fund is: Noah Lee Powell College Fund, C/O First Citizens Bank, 3819 Blue Ridge Blvd., Walhalla, SC 29691.
