Verna Lee Reid Smith of Pisgah Forest, NC passed from this life to eternity in Heaven on Friday, January 15, 2021.
Verna was born September 14, 1924 in Sapphire, NC to Annie Raines Reid Fugate and Thomas Ford Reid. Verna was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, Frank A. Smith, Sr., her parents, her brothers Cartter Reid and J.T. Reid, her sisters Sue Geesen, and Anne Swafford and her stepfather Ed Fugate.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Patricia Smith Jarrett (Horace) and sons, Rev. Frank A. Smith, Jr. (Gwen) and Dean Smith (Donna); 6 grandchildren; Lynn Jarrett Prince (Kevin), Christopher Jarrett, Tess Smith Camp (Kevin), Chesnee Smith Marshall (Brian), Jennie Smith Regan (John) and Matthew Smith (Andrea); 10 great-grandchildren, 11 nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Verna loved her family dearly and spending time with family was one of her greatest joys. Verna thrived on adventure; she traveled extensively, never turning down an opportunity to take a trip. One of her greatest adventures was a trip to the Holy Land; she loved to share the highlights of this experience with family and friends. Additionally, Verna had many wonderful trips with her cousin, Junetta Pell. Verna loved a snowy day. When snow would begin falling on her farm, she would call every member of the family to give them a snow report with the excitement of a small child on Christmas morning. Verna's favorite hobby was gardening, a passion she inherited from her mom; she loved her flower garden and generously shared her flowers with everyone.
Verna served her Lord at Turkey Creek Baptist Church where she was faithful in attendance and ministry. She served lovingly as a teacher and as a member of the prayer and bereavement ministries. Verna and her husband, Frank, founded the Widow's Ministry. The family offers a special thanks to Hope Shuford, who ministered faithfully to Verna when she was no longer able to attend services in person.
Verna graduated from Glenville High School and worked at Olin Corporation in the Finishing Department. Verna's favorite occupation was as a homemaker for her family.
Verna will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory next to her husband, Frank, after a private, graveside celebration led by her dear friend Jeff Shuford. Any memorial gifts may be made to the Widow/Widowers Ministry at Turkey Creek Baptist Church, 805 Capps Rd, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768.
