Obituary

William "Bill" Anthony Medl, age 69 of Brevard, NC, passed away November 9, 2021 after a courageous seven-year battle with metastatic kidney cancer. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathy Layton Medl; two daughters, Lauren Medl Honrine of Carolina Beach and Sarah Lynn Craig of Gastonia; two grandchildren, Lillian Grace Bates and Coy Anthony Craig; a brother Gene Medl; sister Lorraine Martini and numerous other family and friends. Bill was born on August 5, 1952 in Cincinnati, OH to the late Eugene and Loretta Medl. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati and then received his Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology in 1976 from Eastern Kentucky University. After completing an internship at Western Carolina University, he worked for Smoky Mountain Mental Health Center in Franklin until relocating to Gastonia in 1978. His over 35-year career with Gaston County Schools included working as a School Psychologist, High School Guidance Counselor and High School Administrator. His love of music began at an early age, eventually leading him to become a drummer. In 1972, he joined a band with three other musicians and played in venues all over Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Over the last 50 years, these bandmates have continued get together for weekend reunions filled with music and friendship. To say Bill loved the Beatles was an understatement, as he knew the answer to any trivia question you could ask him. Known for his humor and quick wit, Bill never passed up an opportunity to make someone laugh. He loved his two shih tzus, Jojo and Jude, football, the NC mountains and living in Brevard, his time volunteering at Sharing House and supporting the Connestee Falls Student Scholarship Program. He was passionate about education and worked tirelessly to help students achieve their greatest potential. In a loving example of his dedication to students and the pursuit of education, Bill's final wish was to donate his body to the Duke University School of Medicine. The family would like to thank Four Seasons Hospice and Moody-Connolly Funeral Home for their services.
